Experienced any of the following?

-Woken up in the middle of with a tsunami of thoughts, fears, memories, and future stressors all hit you at once.

-Trying for the 8th time to concentrate on an assignment but continuing to get mentally dragged away by your thoughts

-Found it hard to remember important appointments, meetings, and to do’s despite otherwise being great at these things

If so, then it may be time to give your mind a “reset”. Resetting your mind means to take small steps to feel safer in the present moment.

Here are some simple & proven ways to do this

 1. Get back into a routine:

Yes, I said it. Getting back into a routine whatever that looks like in your life is so important to declutter and reset your mind. Why? Because not having a routine leaves us to our own devices and 9 times out of 10 that means we are not doing anything that requires getting off the couch, eating junk more often, and staying up too late (real talk).

Helpful Steps:

  • Remind yourself of all the routines in the past that helped you feel happier and more relaxed.

  • Find simple and non-overwhelming ways to slowly integrate these things into your routine.

  • Don’t overcomplicate it.

2. Declutter Your Mind with a Brain Unloading Session:

All those thoughts ruminating in your mind need to go somewhere, try taking a few moments to yourself and grab a pen & paper or your phones notepad and just write/type away without fear of judgement (no one will see or read this, just make sure to delete it or throw it out afterwards). This is the time where you can cleanse the mind of the worrisome thoughts which will help you process your emotions and fears. Please don’t judge your words, they’re just words. Instead, practice mindfulness by acknowledge them as they come.

3. Outdoors Natures Medicine:

Spending time outdoors helps reduce stress, increase happiness hormones, and improves physical health.

Helpful Examples:

  • Take your pets out on a longer walk around the neighborhood

  • Drive to the park with a nice walking trail during the daytime and enjoy

  • Go to an outdoor mall, grab a cup of coffee or tea and walk around still enjoy the outdoors

  • Take a hike, ride your bicycle, get your skates on!

  • Go with a friend on a nice walk

  • Make this fun!

4. Practice Mindfulness:

Mindfulness is the ability to be present in the very moment we are in without worrying about the past or the future. This is not an easy skill for many people to implement so start slow and do it periodically.

Helpful Ways to Implement This:

  • Download a free mindfulness app on your phone (they have tons!) and start out small by practicing this for 5 minutes first thing in the morning before you get out of bed.

  • Watch a YouTube video on guided meditation exercises.

  • Apple watch, your phone, or your clock at home has timers. Set yours for 60-seconds (we’re starting with small steps) and concentrate on the present moment while breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Then gradually work your way up to 5-minutes of mindfulness.

Remember to take small steps so that you will not overwhelm yourself with all the tasks. These techniques are used to help declutter and reset your mind so be patient with yourself. Work with your mental health therapist to implement the tools that make sense for you and your lifestyle. For instance, if the journal writing from tip #2 doesn’t work for you because you dislike journaling, then use your therapy session to declutter your mind. Make it work for you!
